Assignment 5c
~I chose classmate Jessica, component 4a Group 3, authors Firoozeh Dumas, Devorah Major, Michael Chabon and Kathi Kamen Goldmark. I chose the story Cotton Candy Mirrors by, Devorah Major.
2. What is something this classmate said about the choice that relates to any of the assignments in projects 2-3?
~Jessica's wrote that this story focused around fun house mirrors and how we need to look in the mirrors of other peoples eyes to truly learn. This relates to projects 2-3 because we had to take our knowledge and then look at the information through another students eyes. Through this, our knowledge expounded.
3. What is something different this classmate said about their choice that you did not realize before when you completed projects 2-3?
~Jessica stated that the fair's of the authors time were different than the fairs of her, Jessica's, time. I never even thought about this before. I just always thought that the fair was the fair. But it only makes sense that the fair would change with the times, just like anything else.
4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?
~I went in thinking that the fair was not a big deal, but I learned through Jessica that it can be a big thing for some people. The author said that this was a huge thing in her life and that she looked forward to it. Jessica also said that it was important to her because it signified that school was about to start. I have learned that something as simple as the local fair can mean the world to someone.
5. How has project 2-3 helped you with the readings of the textbook?
Projects 2-3 have helped me with my readings because they helped me to learn to dialogue through reading others blogs. Learning through someone else's typed words rather than their spoken words. It helped prime me for being able to learn from the book.

Assignment 5b
1. Who is your classmate, what is the component category, what is the name of the choice?
~The classmate I chose was Nicolette. I chose component 4A Group 2 authors Hector Tobar, Thomas Steinbeck, Edward Humes, and Matt Warshaw. I chose the story Ode to Caltrans by Hector Tobar.
2. What is something this classmate said about the choice that relates to any of the assignments in projects 2-3?
~Nicolette stated that she had never really thought about the impact of having automobiles had on our generation. We have leaned in projects 2&3 that major cities center around freeways. When you look back over many of the posts of our classmates, you see something that leans towards that ideal.
3. What is something different this classmate said about their choice that you did not realize before when you completed projects 2-3?
~One thing that Nicolette stated that I did not know before was that "An automobile owned is not only symbol of success for his immigrant parents but a vehicle of Independence." I never realized that something like a car could be a symbol for success for immigrants, but it only makes sense. Immigrants are trying to fit in with our culture, and if they can buy a car, then that is a step forward for them.
4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?
~I would relate this to Freire's ideas because I went in not thinking very much about cars and such being important. They were just a novelty item to me. But after reading Nicolette's post, I realize that automobiles and freeways are that and so much more to today's society. As she said, they have "shaped the direction of California's future".
5. How has project 2-3 helped you with the readings of the textbook?
~Project 2-3 helped me with my reading because it helped to open up my knowledge and ideas about California. I got to learn other viewpoints and learn about other places that I never even knew about before. I think that this helped me appreciate the stories in the book even more.Monday, November 24, 2008
5a Group #1
1. Write the story title and author name. .25 point
~909 by: Percival Everett
2. Summarize the reading in one brief paragraph; be specific in your summary. Remember that your classmates will rely on you for this information. 2 percent
~This story is about how Los Angeles is all about area codes. Depending on what area code you live in, you are considered, rich, middle class, lower class, or poor. It also stereotypes you into urban or country. Everett lives in the 909 area code. He discusses taking his mule, Monk, up the mountains and looking over the beautiful landscape and lake.
3. Which was your favorite sentence or paragraph (include entire quote; use quote marks and page number)? 1 percent
~"We say, 'This here is horsey area.' And we have signs that depict basketball-headed silhouette humans seated on silhouette horses. That means go slow." pg. 122
4. What did the reading make you think of? (be specific eg "There is a bridge in SF that spans 4 miles from SF to Oakland and in the middle of the bridge it crosses an island called Treasure Island. This story makes me think of that specific little island where I can see the entire city and bay area. That city was also in the news recently where .... ) .75 percent
~Reading this story, I couldn't help but imagine the rivalries of the different area codes. I can imagine the "rich" snubbing their noses up at the 909 people. Also, when Everett was describing riding his mule, it made me imagine all the times I have gone horseback riding.
5. What is one thing you did not know before you started the reading that you now know (again, be specific using concrete examples)? 1 percent
~One thing that I did not know before reading this was that segregation was by area codes in L.A. I knew that they have very different areas of the city, but I never knew it came down to area codes.

1. Write the story title and author name. .25 point
~The Line, by: Ruben Martinez
2. Summarize the reading in one brief paragraph; be specific in your summary. Remember that your classmates will rely on you for this information. 2 percent
~This story is about the life and culture of the Mexico/California border. Martinez discusses a local park. He says it is completely deserted in in the daytime, but once the sun starts setting, hundreds of people come out for their chance to make it across the border. He compares it to a fiesta. Back when he was watching this, he said that the chances of getting across the border were more than 50%. And if you did not get across the first time, you would definitely get across the second time.
3. Which was your favorite sentence or paragraph (include entire quote; use quote marks and page number)? 1 percent
~"And families, entire families, from grandmothers with crinkled faces and braided white hair down to wide-eyed tots in arms." pg. 127
~Living in California, you can't go a day without hearing about immigration. So I guess this story reminded me of everyday life. This is a huge part of living in California, so it was nice being able to read a story from the "other" side of the line.
5. What is one thing you did not know before you started the reading that you now know (again, be specific using concrete examples)? 1 percent
~One thing that I did not know before reading this was that the crossing of the border is kind of a big party. There is excitement and hope.

1. Write the story title and author name. .25 point
~Flirting with Urbanismo, by: Patt Morrison
2. Summarize the reading in one brief paragraph; be specific in your summary. Remember that your classmates will rely on you for this information. 2 percent
~Morrison also discusses Los Angeles. Like Everett, she discusses how different areas of L.A. tell you your income/social status. (She also discusses area codes). Morrison focuses on downtown L.A. She says that this has become a taboo place to live. Once you are close enough to walk anywhere (eg. grocery store or work), then you need to move. She says that people move way too often just because they do not want to be in downtown. She also talks about the different movies and T.V. shows that have been filmed in L.A.
3. Which was your favorite sentence or paragraph (include entire quote; use quote marks and page number)? 1 percent
~"Downtown is the perfect plastic heart of a plastic city-- plastic in the meaning of changeable, moldable. Its blocks are the most versatile, and thus the most filmed in the world; it can play almost anything-- just as Angelenos can make themselves into what they wish to be." pg. 134
~This story made me think of all the movies that I've seen and realize how many have been filmed in L.A. I have been to L.A. many times, but I never realized how versatile the city really is. It makes me want to go back and experience the city all over again.
5. What is one thing you did not know before you started the reading that you now know (again, be specific using concrete examples)? 1 percent
~Before reading this, I did not know that Seinfeld is actually filmed in Los Angeles and not in New York.

1. Write the story title and author name. .25 point
~Waters of Tranquility, by: Carolyn See
2. Summarize the reading in one brief paragraph; be specific in your summary. Remember that your classmates will rely on you for this information. 2 percent
~This story is about The Shrine Lake in Pacific Palisades. This shrine is dedicated to world peace. It has statues representing the major religions on the world. See talks about how this is one of her favorite places, and how it got her though her husbands illness. The fist time around the lake she would be furious, but after a couple of times around, she was calmed. She says that it is a big tourist spot.
3. Which was your favorite sentence or paragraph (include entire quote; use quote marks and page number)? 1 percent
~"Unemployed dads shepherd their kids around the lake and around again. Tourists from Germany, France, Russia, Japan, and India clump around in raggedy groups taking pictures of each other." pg. 144
~This story made me think of my families and my travels to different countries. I have experienced many different cultures and religions, and it brought back all those memories, good and bad. I thought that this story was very interesting.
5. What is one thing you did not know before you started the reading that you now know (again, be specific using concrete examples)? 1 percent
~Before reading this, I did not know that there was a shrine like this. I think that it is a great idea. It gives respect where respect is due, without offending anyone.

4c; refection on project 3 part 2
~The classmate I chose is Samantha. The category is 3b Beaches. The choice is Bodega Bay.
2. What is something similar this classmate said about the choice?
~Something similar that Samantha and I said about Bodega Bay is that it is cold there. I stated that people stereotype it as a warm beach because it is in California, and she said that Bodega Bay was colder than Seal Beach.
3. What is something different this classmate said about the choice?
~Something different is that Samantha stated that Bodega Bay is a popular surfing place. I said nothing about surfing. I felt that Bodega Bay was more well known for their Salt Water Taffy. This is something that we did not agree on.
4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?
~Going into this, Samantha had certain ideas of what Bodega Bay was known for, and I had a completely different idea. Through this dialogue, I have learned that there are a lot of surfers in that area. I never knew that it was a good place to surf, but I did know about the Salt Water Taffy because it is a family tradition to get some Salt Water Taffy whenever we visit Bodega Bay. I'm glad that I chose to compare with Samantha because I learned a lot from her post.
4b; reflection from project 3
~The classmate I chose is Christina. The category is 3b World Cities. The city choice is Los Angeles.
2. What is something similar this classmate said about the choice?
~Both Christina and I said that Los Angeles has a stereotype for being upper end, and full of rich and famous people. We also both wrote that L.A. has a very bad air quality problem.
3. What is something different this classmate said about the choice?
~Christina wrote that part of her stereotype for L.A is lots of skinny, tall, blond girls in huge houses. The looks of people never crossed my mind when I was writing my stereotypes. I focused mostly on ideals than actual looks of the area. Also she found that L.A. is the largest city in California and I never ran across that in my research.
4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?
~I would relate this to Freire's ideas on dialogue because I learned many things from Christina's post that I did learn while researching it for myself. One example is "L.A. was founded in 1781, and became part of Mexico until 1848 when America took it back in the Mexican-America War." I did not know this. Another thing that I did not know was that L.A. is the biggest city in California. I thought that it would be on the top 5 cities, but I did not know it was on the top of the list.

4a Group #1
The Big Valley, by Mark Arax
2. Summarize the reading in one brief paragraph; be specific in your summary. Remember that your classmates will rely on you for this information. 2 percent
~This reading was about Arax growing up in the San Joaquin Valley. His father used to be a fig farmer but Arax did not carry on that tradition after his father left the farming business. As industrialism spread through the valley, he got swept up into that urban lifestyle. He talks about going on road trips as an adult with his family and listening to the truckers and wishing that he would have never let that old farming tradition go. He has settled for a little garden in his back yard.
3. Which was your favorite sentence or paragraph (include entire quote; use quote marks and page number)? 1 percent
~My favorite quote is "Summer here isn't measured by the calendar but by the pick and pull and squeeze and crush of the unbroken harvest." pg. 20
~This reading made me think of old time farming. I have been to the San Joaquin Valley and I have seen how industrialized it has gotten. At the same time though, it has that old time charm. There is just something about seeing the fruits of the land that makes you feel comfortable and happy. This reading was my favorite this week.
5. What is one thing you did not know before you started the reading that you now know (again, be specific using concrete examples)? 1 percent
~One thing that I learned was that when planting the land, you want to have the lightest possible tractor as to not compact the earth. I learned this on pages 23-24.

1. Write the story title and author name. .25 point
~Transients in Paradise, by Aimee Liu
2. Summarize the reading in one brief paragraph; be specific in your summary. Remember that your classmates will rely on you for this information. 2 percent
~Liu wrote about her experiences living in Beverly Hills. She talks about how there is more to life than fame and fortune. She discusses a funeral she attended saying that people were too wrapped up in themselves and their looks to even care that that person had died or to give that person respect. Even though the city is shallow, she also makes the argument that it is very beautiful, mostly because there are no blemishes inside the city (eg. no garbage dumps, sky rises, slums, or cemeteries).
3. Which was your favorite sentence or paragraph (include entire quote; use quote marks and page number)? 1 percent
~"And there you have the essential current between desire and fear. Desire is merely the version that says, I want and am taking mine - and better me or us than them or you. While inverse, better him or her or them than us, is simple code of fear." pg. 33
~This reading made me think of how caught up we can get in our own lives. When we get so wrapped up in the things that will make us happy, no matter what it does to anyone else, we are missing the big picture. Life isn't just about me and my needs, it is about all of us and all our needs.
5. What is one thing you did not know before you started the reading that you now know (again, be specific using concrete examples)? 1 percent
~One thing that I did not know before reading this was that Beverly Hills does not have a garbage dump or cemetery. The city does not want a blemish on their appearance, so they toss reality to the surrounding cities so that they can remain in their fantasy.

1. Write the story title and author name. .25 point
~Showing off the Owens, by T. Jefferson Parker
2. Summarize the reading in one brief paragraph; be specific in your summary. Remember that your classmates will rely on you for this information. 2 percent
~This reading is about Parker taking his friend to California's Lower Owens River. His friend is an avid angler and has been to many places to fish and has caught many different types of fish. His friend is a bit disappointed with the size of the fish they will be catching (Rainbow Trout under 12") But once he sees the river, he is bit by the fly fishing "bug". Parker discusses that once you have been fly fishing, you will never stop thinking about it. It keeps nagging on you to go out fishing again and again. Parker says that he loves this fly fishing "bug".
3. Which was your favorite sentence or paragraph (include entire quote; use quote marks and page number)? 1 percent
~"I thought of something director Robert Altman recently said: 'I love fishing. You put that line in the water and you don't know what's on the other end. Your imagination is under there.'"
pg. 40
~This reading made me think of all the times I have been fishing with my father and grandparents. My whole family loves to go fishing so I can kind of relate to that fishing "bug". I have never been fly fishing, but I know that I would never pass up a chance to go out on the lake and cast my line.
5. What is one thing you did not know before you started the reading that you now know (again, be specific using concrete examples)? 1 percent
~Before reading this, I did not know that the movie, A River Runs Through It, caused a jump in the amount of people interested in fly fishing. I learned this on page 39.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Write the story title and author name. .25 point
~The Distant Cataract About Which we do not Speak, by Mary Mackey
2. Summarize the reading in one brief paragraph; be specific in your summary. Remember that your classmates will rely on you for this information. 2 percent
~Mackey writes about the inland city of Sacramento. She begins by sharing her experiences with the wildlife in the American River Parkway. This river runs right through the city, but you can hardly tell because of the way it is situated, it feels like it is the middle of nowhere. She then goes on to discuss the many religious ceremonies that take place on the river. (eg. baptisms, sacrifices, and family gatherings) She calls this the "spiritual heart of the river". Even though the city is so diverse, everyone is connected by the river in some way.
3. Which was your favorite sentence or paragraph (include entire quote; use quote marks and page number)? 1 percent
~"This is a town where if you float in a canoe or sit in an island below the levees you cannot see houses (except in a few places where, alas, the zoning restrictions are being violated). This is a town where some state employees kayak to work; where, no matter how hot it gets, you can get goose bumps and blue lips just by going for a swim." pg.48
4. What did the reading make you think of? (be specific eg "There is a bridge in SF that spans 4 miles from SF to Oakland and in the middle of the bridge it crosses an island called Treasure Island. This story makes me think of that specific little island where I can see the entire city and bay area. That city was also in the news recently where .... ) .75 percent
~This reading made me think of all the times I have been to Sacramento and how I have never seen this side of the city. While reading, it made me feel like I had been left out of an important secret of the city. It makes me want to drive to Sacramento and experience the river for myself.
5. What is one thing you did not know before you started the reading that you now know (again, be specific using concrete examples)? 1 percent
~Before reading this, I did not know that Japanese priests put lanterns on the water to honor the deceased from Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. They originally did this to honor those lost at sea. I learned this on page 49.
3c Inland Areas
1. Contains a title using the format listed above .25 points
~3c Inland Areas; Fresno vs. Redding
2. Contains a web link to your locations. (eg you can use the tools in your blog where you paste your work; there is a little icon that looks like a link) .25 points
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Redding,_California
http://www.ci.redding.ca.us/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresno
http://www.fresno.gov/default.htm
http://www.csufresno.edu/
3. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities. .25 point
~This comparison relates to my study of humanities because again, we are learning about a part of California's culture. Last week we learned about beach culture and this week, we are learning about the inland culture of California.
4. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
Fresno:
- That it is swarming with gang activity
- It is super hot all the time
- All the people of the area care about is agriculture
- That the area is mostly republican
- It is a big city, so it must be like L.A.
b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
- Both are very large towns
- Both towns have well known colleges (CSU Fresno and Simpson Univ.)
- Both towns are along a river (San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers)
c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
- Redding has recently been talking about breaking off as another state, calling it Jefferson, and having Redding as the Capital.
- Fresno is mostly agriculture based and Redding is mostly industry based.
- Redding is known for its Christian Colleges.
d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
~I know that Fresno is mostly agriculture based, but I would like to know what their most abundant crop is?
~I know that Redding is in Northern California, but I would like to know if they get a lot of rain like the other towns in that area.
5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? Link that persons blog to this entry (eg cut paste that blog entry here) . .5 point
~The one thing that I learned from Andrea is that Seal Beach is a fast paced beach with younger people and that Bodega Bay is opposite. I have never been to Seal Beach, but I have been to Bodega Bay, so I cant say for sure that Seal Beach has younger people and is more faced paced than Bodega Bay, but I can say that Bodega Bay is very laid back. This is related to our class theoretical foundation because it is comparing two cultures in one state, and Humanities is about culture.
1. Contains a title using the format listed above .25 points
~ 3b Beaches Bodega Bay (Bodega) vs. Pebble Beach (Monterey)
2. Contains a web link to your locations. (eg you can use the tools in your blog where you paste your work; there is a little icon that looks like a link) .25 points
http://www.beachcalifornia.com/pebbleb.html
http://www.beachcalifornia.com/bodespa.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodega_Bay
3. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities .25 point
~This component relates to my study of humanities because beaches are a huge part of California Culture. Beaches are what most people think of when they think of California. In this class we are studying cultures (specifically California Culture) so this assignment is spot on with our studies.
4. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
Bodega Bay:
- One stereotype is that it is a beach in California so it must be warm
- Another stereotype is that everyone who lives in Bodega must be "beach bums" because they live on the beach
- This beach is a beach for the rich and famous
- It is also assumed that this beach is warm all the time because it is in California.
b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
- They both have a big draw for the tourist industry
- Both places are deeply immersed in the "beach culture" in California
- Both are white sand beaches
c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
- Pebble Beach is more business oriented then Bodega Bay
- Bodega Bay is a rather small town compared to Pebble Beach, Monterey
- Bodega Bay is known for their salt water taffy and Pebble Beach is known for their golf course
d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
~ I know that Pebble Beach is a huge tourist attraction for adults, but I would like to know if there is anything for the teen to college age people?
~ I know that Bodega Bay is well known for their salt water taffy, but I would like to know why it became so well known there?
5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? Link that persons blog to this entry (eg cut paste that blog entry here) . .5 point
~One thing that I learned from Cathrynn is that both Los Angeles and San Francisco consider tourism the "backbone" of their economy. This is similar to my experience because when I have visited San Francisco and L.A., I have seen that they are definitely tourist directed with their businesses. This is related to our class theoretical foundation because we are studying culture, and tourism is part of the culture in these two cities.
3. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities. .25 point
~This comparison relates to our study of humanities because we are comparing two different cultures. Humanities is all about learning about what different cultures encompass and this exercise will help us figure our the differences.
4. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
Los Angeles
- There are celebrities everywhere
- If you go to L.A. looking to become famous, you will become famous
- It is always sunny and palm trees are everywhere
- There are street performers and Cable Cars everywhere
- Everyone living in S.F. is homosexual
- Everyone is politically liberal
b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
1. Both places are big tourist areas
2. They both have bad gang problems
3. Both places are very expensive to live in
c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point1. San Francisco is usually pretty cold, and Los Angeles is usually very warm
2. The air quality in L.A. is way worse than the environmentally "conscious" S.F.
3. L.A. is more "high end" socially then San Francisco
d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
I know that San Francisco is racially diverse, but I would like to know how the people living there became so accepting.I know that Los Angeles has really poor air quality, but I would like to know what they are trying to do to fix this problem.
5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? ~From Sheena I learned that AT&T Park is famous for their Crackerjacks and hot dogs. Her experience with AT&T Park is different from mine. She has been there to see baseball games and I have been there to see concerts. These experiences are related to our classes theoretical foundation because both are about cultural interaction. Both experiences are about being together with others, enjoying pastimes. They are both a big part of American culture.
2. Contains the sources you used with links to these sources .25 points
3. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point
4. Contains the following "analytical elements":
a. Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point
b. Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point
c. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point
d.Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point
3. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point
~This relates to my study of humanities because this museum is all about learning from doing. It is also about learning by interacting with others. Quite a few exhibits require more than one person to work right. Freire's beliefs included learning through interaction with others.
a. Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point
~For this assignment, I chose the museum, The Exploratorium. I'm glad that I chose this museum because I have always loved going to the museum, but by researching it, I found out that their website has exhibits on it. When you go to the museum, you see a rather plain building, but inside, you find many exciting, interactive, and creative exhibits. Also, there is the Palace of Fine Arts building with a lake behind the Exploratorium building.
b. Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point
~The Exploratorium is all about learning something new in a fun and creative way. When you actually get to be involved in a science project, you tend to remember more of what you did, than if you only watched.
~The reason that I chose this museum is because it is one of my favorite museums of all time, and it is right here close to home. The museum website stated that the museum have over 500,000 visitors a year, so it seems that others feel the same way about the museum that I do.
~I have learned that The Exploratorium's website has exhibits online, but I would like to know how often they put up new experiments on the website and at the facility.
5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? Link that persons blog to this entry (eg cut paste that blog entry here) . .5 point
~From Rachael I learned that the Santa Cruz Boardwalk is California's oldest surviving amusement park. This is completely different from my research because the town I chose did not have an amusement park. San Luis Obispo is a small town and Santa Cruz in a big town. Santa Cruz is related to history of California because it shows that Californians are trill seekers and that we have been that way for a long time.
~ The town of San Luis Obispo (SLO) relates to my study of humanities because the towns people of SLO are very into their culture. They have a very active night life in a very small town, so there is a lot of interaction and learning between people. They also have a higher learning facility, California Polytechnic Institute SLO.
4. Contains the following "analytical elements":
a. Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? ~ The town that i chose was San Luis Obispo. I think that I choose a very interesting town. Even though they are a small town, they are full of activity. As I looked at videos and websites, I saw that the town has a very busy night life. Every Thursday they have a farmers market from 6pm to 9pm. The bars and pubs often have live entertainment. There is a high population of college students (about 20,000) and yet there seems to be a good mix of all age groups at any given time.
b. Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point
~ My choice of town is centered around having pride for your town. Not only because of their highly sought after college, but also because of their love of community.
c. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point
~ I chose this city because I am planning to transfer to Cal Poly next fall and I wanted to learn more about the city I will soon be living in. I am glad with my choice of researching this city because now I am even more in love with the coast line, the people and the college.
d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point
~ I have learned that the town of San Luis Obispo offers a farmers market once a week and has many pubs, but I would like to know if they offer anything else like night clubs or other hang outs for college students.
5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? ~ One thing that I learned from Colleen was that he did not believe in the idea of education "banking", which is only one sided. He believed that education was a two way street between educator and pupil. This is a common experience for me. I have been in many situations where I was explaining something to someone and they showed me a different way of interpreting the same information that I never realized it could have been. This is related to our classes theoretical foundation because that type of learning is what we are trying to experience. We are giving our thoughts and ideas, but we are also learning from our classmates and teacher. I believe that this idea relates to our country because a majority of lower education does not use this idea. They are all about trying to cram information into the children's heads and they do not give them the chance to critically analyze anything.
Assignment 1c
1. Christina believes that she has a very positive view of California. She believe that this differs from the view of non-Californians.
2. a. The first thing that I learned abut Paulo Freire from Christina's post is that his five educational focuses were: dialogue, praxis, conscientization, experience, and metaphors. He also liked not working with a curriculum. He felt that people learned better in different settings.
b. The second thing that I learned was that he took the many things he learned from his many travels and used those new found ideas in his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed. I also learned that he wrote another book, but Pedagogy of the Oppressed was the most famous.
3. This informaion relates to our study of humanities because we are studying the human nature and culture. Education, whether big or small, is still an important part of every culture.
Linda
1. Linda lives 8.4 miles from the SRJC campus and has never created a blog before.
2. a. The first thing that I learned from Linda's post was that one of the teaching methods Freire highly encouraged was the dialogue between teacher and student. Through this, both the teacher and the student would be learning.
b. The second thing that I learned was that another idea of his was "Critical Conscientiousness". This is explained as realizing the correlation between ones problems and experiences and the "social contexts in which they're imbedded".
3. This information relates to our study of humanities because as we are learning, we are in dialogue with each other, so we are actually using one of Freire's ideas in our class time and assignments.
Assignment 1b
2. Freire wrote a book entitled, Pedagogy of the Oppressed. This book is one of the most quoted "educational texts" today. It was about his ideas on bringing liberation and education together. He made many great impacts on today's educational system and is still doing so even after his passing.
3. On March 31, 1964, there was a coup d'etat in his country, Brazil. The military was in rule for twenty years. During this time Freire was arrested twice and in political exile for 15 years. He returned to Brazil in 1979.
Assignment 1a
My name is Rebekah.
2. Why are you taking this class and what do you hope to learn?
I am taking this class for my GE requirement. I am hoping to learn more about the culture in California.
3. How far do you live from SRJC main campus ?
I live 2.70 miles from the SRJC main campus
4. What do you think of when you think "California"? Does this differ from what non-Californians think and if so, how?
When I think of California, I am reminded of the beauty of the country-side and the diversity that I have come to love. I believe that this does differ from what others think of California. I have family back east that wont come to visit because they are afraid of the earthquakes. They have a negative view of California.
5. Have you created a blog or webpage in the past?
Yes, I have created a blog before. I actually created this blog over the summer for Interdisciplinary Studies 4.
Week 5 Project 5c
I believe that with the knowledge that I gained this semester, I can better appreciate the art. I now understand the trials and tribulations that this culture had to go through and why they want to preserve their lifestyles. I can now understand the uniqueness of the art.
2. Rodolfo Morales' artwork relates to the topics we studied this summer because most of his artwork depicts indigenous people of Latin America. In week 3 of our studies, we all had to choose a native culture to research. Morales' art is a visual depiction of the life of these people we studies. Another important aspect of his work is that he usually draws women in rural areas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodolfo_Morales
Artwork title: De mantelos largos, Dressed to the Nines, 1994
Location: http://www.molaa.com/n_exhibitions_permanent_collection.html
Connection: I came across this piece of work while exploring the MoLAA website. This piece of work relates to my study of humanities because it gives you a look into the lives of native women of Latin America.
Observation: The subject of this work is two women. In the painting, other than the women, there is a building (possibly a Cathedral), two angels, and a pair of hands. The work is made of paint. The artist uses many bright colors and a sort of fantasy-like type of drawing.
Interpretation: What I think this painting is saying is that no matter what happens in life, God (the church being used as an example of God) is always there for His people.
Judgement: I chose this piece of art because the angels caught my eye. I love artwork with angels in it. I feel that this piece of work has a strong message about religion and the church. I feel this way because I know that the Latin Culture is big into religion (every area has their own beliefs) and it would make sense that a religous painting would come from Latin America.
Questioning: I know that this artist draws native women, but I would like to know what the extra set of hands represents.
Week 5 Project 5b
Week 5 Project 5a
Most of Latin America gained its independence by 1825. They were following the examples of the United States and France Revolutions. Latin American Independence helped create a new Latin American ruling class. Though independent, the United States and Europe still had great influence on Latin America. It is only in recent times that they took input from the native people of the area. Latin America became a "Western" influenced culture. The new political and economic ideals made an even bigger gap between the classes. The elite class ruled most of the land. This led to a large society of peasant workers. This all led to more Caudillos, military chiefs, controlling Latin America.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Latin_America
3. Father Hidalgo of Mexico
4. I chose this person because I have heard of Father Hidalgo before and I wanted to learn more about him. I wanted to know what he did in Latin American history that made him so well known.
5.
a. In 1810, Father Hidalgo of Mexico led the New Spain people in an uprising against the country of Spain. This led to the formation of Mexico which Father Hidalgo is considered the "Father of the Country".
b. Father Hidalgo was a priest in a small town called Dolores. This is where he organized meetings and taught farmers how to work the land.
c. Hidalgo's ideals were liberal in nature and led him to join a group of people that were against Spanish Dominance. His banner was an image of the Virgin Guadalupe.
Week 4 Project 4c
According to Wikipedia, culture "refers to patterns of human activity and the symbolic structures that give such activities significance and importance." This means that every group of people in the world has different beliefs, dances, music, art, and life. The things that these people do is what makes up their culture. Culture is passed down through generations, and the new generation is trusted in keeping their culture alive and thriving. Culture ties into the subject of missions and colonization because there is a clash of cultures when these things happen. Many times, one culture is forced to let go of their culture and embrace a new one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture
2. Jessica 4a
From Jessica I learned that California's 18th mission was the largest mission. It was called San Luis Rey de Francia (a.k.a. "The King of the Missions"). It was named after King Louis IX. In the garden, there was springs that ran through the mouths of gargoyles and the Indians did their laundry there. This relates to Freire because to the Spaniard, Missions were seen as a place of education. They felt that they were educating the savages, and that was good to them. This relates to the region we are studying because during that time, California was still a part of Latin America.
Stephanie 3a
For Stephanie, I learned about the Pipil peoples. The Pipil live in western El Salvador and Honduras. They speak a dialect of Nauhatl called Pipil. There are about 200,000 Pipil left and the language has pretty much died because it was banned in 1930. Their mythology is very influenced by the Maya and they are pantheistic. They also practiced human sacrifice. The Pipil people were an agricultural culture. Freire can be related to this because it shows how education is influenced by those other cultures around you. For example, the Pipil people had similar mythology to the Maya because they interacted with them. This relates to the region we are studying because the Pipil people live in Latin America.
Week 4 Project 4b
Week 4 project 4a
The Conquest/Colonial era is from 1492-1810. This time period is known for shaping Latin America into what it is today. During this time, the native peoples were wiped out. One of the main reasons for this is because of diseases like smallpox. Also during this time, the culture was banned. The new Spanish control kept a tight reign on what could be kept and what could not. The last reason this is considered a shaping time is because the Spanish rewrote the native history. The Spaniards were not able to read what was recorded, so the redid it themselves.
5. Junipero Serra of Mallorca
I chose to research Junipero Serra because when I was watching the videos for the assignment, his story peaked my interest. I used a video and a print source. On the video, you can see pictures of missions and hear the history of Junipero Serra. On the printed site, there is a history of Serra and info about the missions.
6. 3 Facts on Junipero Serra of Mallorca
1. Father Junipero Serra founded the first missions in California. The goal of the missionaries was to convert the heathens of the new world to Christianity. The Missionaries from Mallorca were well noted for their success.
2. Serra was inspired by many saints including, St. Xavier of India, St. Francis Solono of Peru, and St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis of Assisi was a prime example for Serra in his belief of humble simplicity and caring for those in need.
3. Junipero Serra came to California at 56 years of age. He was an asthmatic and had an issue with chronic leg soreness the last 15 years of his life. Even though these things plagued him, he still walked thousands of miles, rode on the back of mules, and sailed thousands of miles to spread what he believed.
Week 3 Project 3c
Paulo Freire believed that there was strength in numbers. He believed that people should work together rather than fighting one another. During the 1970's he traveled the world lecturing about his ideas. He has even been invited to Harvard University to speak. He has become highly influential around the world.
Paulo Freire ideas relate to this class in many ways. For one, we are furthering our education by taking this class. That was one of Freire's central beliefs. He believed that education was power. Another reason he relates is because we are studying Latin America and he did many great things there. He influnced what we can currently study.
3b
I also know that the Guaraní people had no written language, so I'm wondering if the fish has a significant meaning to the Guaraní people.
Week 3 Project 3a
The Pre-Columbian era is the time in history before the appearance of significant European influences on the American continents. It is technically refering to the time before Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas. Pre-Columbian is also used when talking about the great indigenous civilizations of the Americas, such as those of Mesoamerica (the Aztec and Maya) and the Andes (Inca, Moche, Chibcha, Cañaris).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-Columbian
Topic: Guaraní, see
Visiting an Indian Guarani Village- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV9XUw8N8a0
Wikipedia, Guaraní- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guaran%C3%AD
5. The reason that I chose the Guaraní is because I have never heard of this culture before and I love learning about new cultures.
The first source is a video clip. On this video, you will get a first hand account of what a common day Guaraní village looks like and what the people do. It has a examples of traditional dance and of common household doings.
The second source is a Wikipedia history of the Guaraní people. It explains who they are, their language, where they live, and how their lives were interrupted by missionaries.
6.
Fact 1: The Guaraní people speak a language called Guaraní. This language was only oral. There was no written words. The language is still a national language of Paraguay (the other being Spanish) and is widely spoken by the Paraguay people.
Fact 2: Before coming in contact with Europeans, the Guaraní people called themselves, Abá, meaning "men" or "people". The europeans used the name Guaraní for those that converted and called those who would not convert Cayua or Caingua.
Fact 3: Early villages were communal homes of 10 to 15 families. These groups were chosen by common interest and dialect. It was estimated that there were about 400,000 Guaraní before the Europeans arrived. The Guaraní people practiced a form of animistic pantheism and their mythology is still widespread in rural Paraguay today.
7. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guaran%C3%AD
This source is credible, I believe, because it is and encyclopedia website. Yes, anyone can change the info, but that means anyone can correct the information too.
